Group meetings and all the reasons why you should wait behind…

If you wait behind, will you die?

Nigerian students are familiar with the ‘please wait behind’ phrase often uttered by group leaders after a class. The idea behind having group presentations or group work is to build team spirits… I think. However, most Nigerian students have 90% defeated this ideology by literally running away in order to absent themselves from such meetings. I mean, is it not your CA we’re talking about here???

Lol. Well, if you are a Nigerian student who is guilty of this (I know I was), here are some reasons why you should really stop. Maybe you already know some of these reasons but repetition might just be the key to you actually heeding wise counsel 😉

  1. It’s your C.A: It is actually your C.A! Your grade is on the line every time you neglect to participate in group preparations or meetings towards a common goal. If your grade is important to you, you would stop missing group meetings.
  2. Your village people may be working overtime: I remember one time when I got dragged to my group meeting for a radio course after deliberately missing it for more than a week. Only for me to find out that if I had not made it to that meeting — which happened to be the last meeting, the group leader had already omitted my name from the list of members who put in the work.
P.S- The course lecturer was not a big fan of second chances.
  3. Your team members actually need you: This is not always a given but I know from experience that it does take a village to raise a kid (ok maybe this does not exactly fit in but it sure sounded smart 😅). Everyone in the group has something special to render so do not leave your team stranded because you have other things to do. I am pretty sure your team members have other things to do too.
  4. It can be pretty fun: Trust me, once you get over how annoying it is to wait behind after class — especially when you’re hungry — group meetings can actually be fun when everyone is fully present and giving their best to the team.
  5. Team work makes the dream work: Cliche but true. When everyone is in on what is happening and can defend the work done, presentation or whatever it is that has to be done goes seamless and smooth. You’ll be smiling with your A grade safely in your pocket
